Mohawk Council of Kanesatake Environmental Contaminants and Health Impact Project

In collaboration with the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake (Ratishontsanonhstats Environment) and McGill University, we conducted the first-ever analysis of environmental contaminants in this First Nations territory to assess their potential health impacts on the community members. This research has been funded since 2019 by the Environmental Contaminants Program for First Nations (PLCEPN), Indigenous Services Canada.

Building on the success of our collaboration with the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake, McGill University, and TerraHumana Solutions, these three partners received a prestigious federal grant from the federal Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) under the Alliance Program

The primary objective of this project is to learn from the ongoing environmental contaminants project in Kanesatake (and beyond), which is typically driven by institutionalized methods. These lessons will be used to design, develop, and actively test new approaches for assessing contaminated sites in Kanesatake and other Indigenous communities.
